Collaborative Divorce Child Specialist

What is Collaborative Divorce?

Collaborative divorce is a respectful, team-oriented approach to divorce that prioritizes the needs of both parents and their children. In this process, a group of professionals, including Collaborative Family Law lawyers, Financial Specialist, and Mental Health Professionals (Divorce Coaches and Child Specialist), work together to help the family navigate the challenges of divorce while minimizing conflict.

The Role of a Child Specialist

When children are involved in a divorce, their well-being must be a central focus throughout the process. A child specialist is a trained mental health professional (Registered Clinical Counsellor) who works with families undergoing divorce to ensure that children's needs and perspectives are addressed. Their role is essential in creating an outcome that is in the best interest of the child(ren)while supporting both parents in reaching a collaborative solution.

Responsibilities of a Child Specialist:

  • Understanding the Child's Needs
The child specialist meets with the children, helping to understand their emotional and psychological needs.
  • Providing Guidance for Parents
Child specialists offer insight to parents on how to best support their children during the divorce process.
  • Help Create Parenting Plans
They provide information that can help create a parenting plan with the Divorce Coaches that ensures the children have consistent and meaningful relationships with both parents.
  • Emotional Support
A child specialist can help children cope with the changes that come with divorce, offering therapeutic support to help them process their emotions and navigate the transition in a healthy way.
